    Beschreibung
English: Generic template for coat of arms of a Patriarch (Latin rite) and Primate.

The green cords and tassels on a patriarch’s coat of arms (in the Latin Rite) may feature gold embroidery; however, this practice has fallen into disuse. There are currently only four patriarchs in the Latin Rite (those of Lisbon, Venice, Jerusalem, and the East Indies), and there is no risk of confusing them with primates, for the following reasons:

    • The Patriarch of Lisbon is also the Primate of Portugal; furthermore, by virtue of an acquired privilege, he is permitted to display the papal tiara—without the keys—on his coat of arms.[1]
    • The Primate of Italy is the Pope; additionally, the Patriarch of Venice displays the Lion of Saint Mark—the symbol of Venice—in the chief (the upper section) of his coat of arms.
    • The Patriarch of Jerusalem displays the Jerusalem Cross.
    • The title of Patriarch of the East Indies is an *ad honorem* (honorary) title held by the Archbishop of Goa and Daman (India), who also bears the title of Primate of the East.[2], [3]

According to the book "Heraldry in the Catholic Church: Its Origins, Customs, and Laws" by Monsignor Bruno Bernhard Heim, the use of gold-embroidered tassels has no formal basis; it is neither a right nor an obligation, but merely a stylistic choice. The rank of a patriarch or primate should be expressed through the heraldic ornaments themselves. Historically, the office of primate emerged in regions where no patriarchate existed; therefore, there is no justification for mandating the use of gold embroidery on the tassels.
